Choco Treasure eggs avoid U.S. ban on toy-filled candy with new design

For the past 75 years, American children have been deprived of one of the great joys enjoyed by their peers in other parts of the world: the toy-filled chocolate egg. Treats such as Kinder Surprise, which hide tiny trinkets inside a delicious candy shell, constitute the single largest children’s candy category in the world, with over a billion sold every year. However, the product is banned in the U.S. by both the 1938 Food, Drug & Cosmetics Act and the Consumer Products Safety Commission. Importation, even by a tourist, carries a fine of up to $2500 an egg. So the only way a law-abiding child could taste them has been to travel abroad.

But the era of want is over. Lebanon, N.J.-based Candy Treasure LLC designed a new kind of candy-filled chocolate egg that skirts the longstanding ban — and the eggs are now available in stores across the country. Here’s a photo of the egg in its wrapping:

chocotreasure eggs

BuzzFeed Food jokes that the new product is a sign that American children have finally been “deemed smart enough to eat Kinder Eggs,” but it’s actually the result of Candy Treasure’s ingenuity.

In a phone interview, Candy Treasure founder Kevin Gass told The Huffington Post that the products were inspired by the success of products like Kinder Surprise abroad — and the failure of similar products in America. He cited the costly recall of Nestle Magic, which passed muster with the Consumer Products Safety Commission but not the FDA in the late ’90s, as a major cautionary tale in the field.

“Different companies at various times have come close, but no one has ever been able to crack the mystery of how to make a safer, and still fun, surprise-type egg,” he said. “Being able to figure that out — crack that egg, so to speak — was the exciting moment.”

The development process took about three years. Their key innovation was a ridge in the seam of the brightly-colored plastic egg that contains the toy. That allowed them to mold the two chocolate halves of the eggs to the capsule, but not to each other. A narrow gap between them clearly reveals the seam of the inedible plastic egg underneath, reducing the risk that an unthinking tot would gulp down the egg, toy and all, in one bite. A patent for the design is pending. Here’s a photo:

The eggs come in dinosaur, sports and Spiderman-branded versions; Christmas ornaments and a “girl license” toy version are slated for later this year. They are being sold for between $1 and $1.50 each at Target, local candy stores and directly from the Candy Treasure website.

Gass said that sales have been even higher than expected. He declined to give specific figures, but said that the quantity sold so far was in the “low millions.” The first batch is already sold out — from the company’s warehouses, but not from retail stores. Candy Treasures has doubled its order of eggs from its factory in Turkey for its second run, Gass said.

Swiss Tourist Gang-Raped in Central India

Image

NEW DELHI (AP) — A Swiss woman who was touring by bicycle with her husband through the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh was gang-raped by a group of eight men, police said Saturday.

Thirteen men were detained and questioned in connection with the attack, which occurred Friday night as the couple camped out in a forest after bicycling from the temple town of Orchha, local police officer R.K. Gurjar said.

The men beat the couple and gang-raped the woman, he said. They also stole the couple’s mobile phone, a laptop computer and 10,000 rupees ($185).

The woman was in a hospital Saturday in the nearby city of Gwalior, Gurjar said, adding that she and her husband apparently suffered no major injuries.Police detained 13 men and questioned them in connection with the attack, he said. Six of the men were released after questioning. No other details were immediately available.

Indian television stations showed scores of police searching the forest where the attack occurred.

India has seen outrage and widespread protests against rape and attacks on women since December’s fatal gang-rape of a young woman in a moving bus in New Delhi, the capital. The crime horrified Indians and set off nationwide protests about India’s treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.

Nicki Minaj misses American Idol

nickiminaj3

Nicki Minaj was late for ‘American Idol’ last night because she was stuck in traffic.

The judge appeared to miss the evening’s first performance by Curtis Finch Jr., but while she wasn’t in her seat to give him her thoughts on his singing, he claims she heard him.

Curtis – who performed Fantasia’s ‘Believe’ – told E! news: “During the performance, she was backstage.”

He added the star almost ran into her as he stepped off stage, adding: “It was literally like, ‘Step, step, step, curtain, Nicki. And she was like, ‘Good job today.’ ”

“To see her backstage was comforting.”

Some of the other contestants noted Nicki has fallen foul of Los Angeles’ notoriously bad traffic before.

Paul Jolley said: “It’s not the first time and probably not the last. But I’m OK with it. I love Nicki.”

Burnell Taylor, who sang Westlife’s ‘Flying Without Wings’ on the show feels Nicki has earned the right to be late if she chooses.

He said: “I mean, when you look that good, you have to be late.”

Devin Velez came up with some possible solutions to get the ‘Starships’ rapper to the studios on time.

He said: “Maybe we could get her a helicopter. Or some tennis shoes, so she can run.”

Other singers in the final include Lazaro Arbos, Janelle Arthur, Candice Glover, Kree Harrison, Amber Holcomb and Angie Miller.

Katy Perry has signed a £2 million deal to write her autobiography.

The ‘Firework’ hitmaker – who is currently dating John Mayer – is expected to discuss in detail her 14-month marriage to British comic Russell Brand in the tome, which will be called ‘Part of Me’ because she wants to put out her side of the story before her former spouse releases the next instalment of his ‘My Booky Wook’ autobiographical series.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “Several publishers have been after Katy for a while. She decided to go ahead so fans don’t have a one-sided story when Russell publishes another ‘Booky Wook’.”

The news comes weeks after Russell – who has written two books about his life, ‘My Booky Wook’ and ‘Booky Wook 2: This Time It’s Personal’ – confirmed he was discuss his relationship with the pop star in his third literary offering because he knows he can’t ignore something that was such a huge part of his life.

Russell – who split from Katy in December 2011 – said: “I will write more Booky Wooks, I love writing those Booky Wooks and there’s a lot to cover. Maybe I’ll wait until I get married again or have more children before I write any more.

“You can’t write things about your life and not include things that happened in your life.”

Ed Sheeran on Taylor Swift rumours

edsheeran3

Ed Sheeran says speculation about him dating Taylor Swift has made him feel like a “stud”.

The 22-year-old singer insists he isn’t romantically involved with the ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ hitmaker and while he enjoys hearing rumours about their apparent relationship, he knows the blonde beauty is off-limits after she recently dated his good friend Harry Styles.

Ed – who collaborated with Taylor on track ‘Everything Has Changed’, which appears on her fourth studio album ‘Red’ – said: “My mates believed it. And my mates are texting me being like, ‘Is it true?’ so I said it wasn’t but the fact that people can believe it makes me feel like a bit of a stud, you know?

“I’ve got to be honest because one of my best friends did date her. I’m not that kind of guy. But the fact that people believed it impressed me a little bit.”

The ‘Lego House’ hitmaker and the 23-year-old star were recently romantically linked to each other after they stayed up talking until 4am at Taylor’s London hotel before last month’s BRIT Awards, but the flame-haired singer insists the pair were simply playing music to each other rather than making it.

In an interview for New Zealand broadcaster TVNZ, he added: “I did go to her hotel, I did stay there until four and I did leave in the same clothes – but I was playing her my new record. It was strictly that kind of thing.

“Literally, I went in there and we passed the guitar back and forth and played songs to each other.”

When asked if he went in for a sneaky smooch, he replied: “I’m a professional.”

Ed is currently supporting Taylor on her ‘Red’ tour in North America, which started last night in Nebraska, and runs until September – and he admits it would be “awkward” if they started dating because they have to work together.

He added: “Six months on the road with someone, that could get a bit awkward.”

Adele demands huge wedding fee

Image

Adele reportedly requested £100,000 a minute to perform at a wedding.

The ‘Skyfall’ hitmaker was approached by South African fruit juice tycoon Vivian Imerman – who is worth around £400 million – to sing a 25-minute set at the nuptials of his daughter Megan at London’s upmarket Grosvenor House hotel, but he decided against hiring the services of the award-winning superstar after discovering the brief performance would cost £2.5 million.

A source told the Daily Star newspaper: “Vivian is planning a lavish wedding.

“He paid Amy Winehouse thousands to perform at his eldest daughter Bianca’s wedding three years ago. He hoped to do the same again with Adele.

“But he was surprised when he was told she’d cost £2.5m.

“Despite his bulging bank balance even he thought it was too expensive and is looking at other artists.”

Despite missing out on the money from the wedding, Adele – who has five-month-old son Angelo with fiance Simon Konecki – is unlikely to be too disappointed as she is reportedly close to signing a £10 million deal to front an advertising campaign for a cosmetics firm.

She is said to be considering offers from Estée Lauder, L’Oréal and Dior to be the face of their brands, but will only accept if the ideas fit to her tastes.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “Adele is in big demand. She would only accept if the campaigns were to her taste and incorporate her music.

“The last thing she wants is a cheesy ad with a naff catchphrase.

“They would have to be in keeping with her personality.

“It’s going to take a lot of persuasion to get her to agree but, right now, it looks as if she’s close to signing a deal.”

The ‘Rumour Has It’ hitmaker has previously admitted she was concerned endorsement deals could “taint” her image.

In a 2011 interview, she said: “It’s shameful when you sell out. It depends on what kind of artist you wanna be, but I don’t want my name anywhere near another brand.

“I don’t wanna be tainted or haunted.”

Kim Kardashian facing divorce grilling

Image

Kim Kardashian’s divorce case deposition will take place later this month.

The 32-year-old reality TV star – who is expecting her first child in early July with her rapper boyfriend of almost one year Kanye West – will reportedly be confronted about faking scenes for her E! series when her estranged husband Kris Humphries’ lawyers finally sit down to grill her in two weeks time ahead of their divorce battle.

A source told gossip website RadarOnline.com: “Kim’s deposition is now scheduled. It will take place in the next two weeks at her lawyer Laura Wasser’s office. It’s scheduled to take all day, and Kim has been dreading it.”

Kim’s deposition will be recorded and used as evidence in her upcoming divorce trial against Kris, who is continuing to contest their divorce and wants an annulment on the basis of fraud.

A producer of ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ has already admitted that a few scenes were either faked, edited or staged in his recent deposition, including Kris’ televised marriage proposal.

The Brooklyn Nets player’s legal team were previously said to be keeping a close eye on Kim’s reality show to gather information to help them question her at her upcoming deposition.

An insider said: “Kris’ lawyers are being meticulous in their preparation of Kim’s deposition, and impending divorce trial.”

Kris’ attorney Marshall Waller recently applied to be taken off the sportsman’s legal team after he advised there was no legal grounds or evidence to support his claims of fraud.

Katy Perry dropping house price

katyperry2

Katy Perry is set to lose money on her former marital home.

The ‘Wide Awake’ singer is preparing to list the Hollywood Hills property she shared with her now ex-husband Russell Brand on the market for significantly less than the purchase price.

According to gossip website TMZ.com the 28-year-old singer is the sole owner of the plush mansion and has been eager to quietly sell it for some time but has failed to attract a price close to the $8 million she initially wanted for the place.

An insider revealed that the singer, who is now dating John Mayer, wanted to avoid putting the house on the multiple listing service because she didn’t want people to be aware she was selling the property.

A real estate inside said Katy has now agreed to put the property on the open market in two weeks time and will reduce the price by approximately $500,000.

The source indicated that she is likely to accept offers even if they are $1 million less than she originally wanted.

Russell agreed to give Katy their former home when they divorced in December 2011 after just 14 months of marriage.

The couple didn’t sign a prenuptial agreement prior to their marriage in India, meaning the British comedian was legally entitled to half of Katy’s $44 million fortune.

However, the ‘Get Him to the Greek’ star claimed he didn’t want anything from his estranged wife and was keen for their divorce to be as amicable as possible.

Couran Cove to reopen shortly

Image

SELF-made man Craig Dowling is preparing to literally hang the welcome sign back up at Couran Cove.

Mr Dowling, who purchased the South Stradbroke Island resort in October, is counting down the days before Couran Cove is reopened to day trippers and boaties.

He hopes to attract the same number of visitors that went there when it was in its heyday.

The resort is almost deserted now, but a decade ago staff were run off their feet looking after the 600 people a day who turned up during the week and the 2000 guests who arrived each weekend.

The wording on the wall at the entrance to the marina, which use to read “no casual berthing”, has already been changed to “casual berthing” and other signs will soon be in place encouraging visitors.

Giving a rare tour of his resort yesterday, Mr Dowling said he believed support from the Gold Coast and southeast Queensland was crucial if the fortunes of Couran Cove were going to turn around.

“Couran Cove is an iconic property and we want to ensure it reaches its full potential,” he said.

“One of the things that has held it back in recent years is that it has been closed off to non-resort visitors.

“So we are changing that now.”

Mr Dowling said he was aiming to make Couran Cove “user-friendly, economic and welcoming”.

“The reverse has been true in the past,” he said.

The Brisbane-based businessman, who made his money as director of construction firm Buildev and is now a director of Indian-owned Adani Mining, took control of the property in late November.

He bought Couran Cove from voluntary liquidators at Ferrier Hodgson, who acted for the resort’s developer, US billionaire philanthropist Chuck Feeney.

Mr Feeney poured $283 million into Couran Cove from 1998 until June 2011, when he shut the property he had owned for 13 years.

Mr Dowling yesterday declined to name the price he had paid for Couran Cove, but the sum is believed to be well below the property’s replacement cost.

A revamp of the resort’s facilities is well under way and a soft re-launch is planned before Anzac Day, when many of the rooms will be refurbished and most public areas, including the marina, will be reopened.

“The bones of the resort were good,” said Mr Dowling.

“But we have had change the design of the rooms and other areas to bring it up to the year 2013.”

The freehold assets of Couran Cove include 158 units and waterfront buildings with a restaurant, cafe and conference facilities.

The main leasehold assets are 102 marina berths and jetties.

Mr Dowling, who plans to market the resort nationally, said there were so many opportunities to make a success of Couran Cove.

“There is the obvious tourism business, then there’s the convention and conference business,” he said.

An official opening is being planned for September, when the facelift is expected to be complete.

Facebook could soon add hashtags

Facebook hashtag

#REALLY?: Sources claim Facebook will soon add the hashtag to their network.

Facebook is reportedly preparing to imitate one of Twitter’s signature features – the hashtag.

Sources close to the social media giant have revealed the decision, but not much else, The Wall Street Journal reports. It remains unclear exactly how Facebook would implement hashtags, and the feature will not be available for some time.

A hashtag is a word or spaceless phrase with a “#” proceeding it, made popular by Twitter in 2007 as a way to categorise tweets about the same topic.

Use has exploded since then, from the tempering down of a self-congratulatory post (“#humblebrag”), to the much-mocked “#yolo”.

Hashtags have entered the popular lexicon, in part due to their spreading to Instagram and Tumblr, and are commonly used on Facebook despite the lack of functionality.

Hashtags would allow Facebook users to categorise their posts, letting Facebook easily index the large amount of content posted to the site daily.

One huge reality CHECK for The Kardashians; three sisters potentially facing $10M lawsuit for their cosmetics line, ‘Khroma’

Image

As if the triple-Ks need anymore lawsuits. The Kardashians are in trouble for their beauty line ‘Khroma’ which is a line of makeup essentials, mascara, lashes and lip glosses. The sisters have been using their show to broadcast their new line. They were planning to launch their products in over 5,000 different retailers when their products suddenly got ‘shelved’. Supposedly, the Kardashians are being sued by a Florida based company named Kroma Makeup. Daily Mail reports:

The firm’s owner Lee Tillett trademarked the Kroma name back in 2010 and she sent a cease-and-desist letter to Boldface, the company that produces the Kardashian-fronted Khroma line, when the range was launched.

Miss Tillett sought $10m (£6.67m) in damages from the sisters and Boldface Group Inc for ‘stealing’ the name of her cosmetics line.

She claimed that the girl’s company, for which they were guaranteed to make at least $6.2 million, would cause confusion in the marketplace.

And it seems like the judge on the case agrees, according to Law360: ‘Tillett has demonstrated that [she] will likely lose business opportunities, customers and goodwill due to Boldface’s use of the confusingly similar Khroma Beauty marks,’ said U.S. District Judge Audrey B. Collins in her ruling.

‘The court has little doubt that, in short order, the Khroma Beauty products will likely eliminate Tillett’s business entirely, creating irreparable harm sufficient to justify an injunction.’Image

Jay-Z to executive produce and record music for “The Great Gatsby” Movie

Image

Jay-Z is set to produce the music and soundtrack for the upcoming film based on the classic American novel “The Great Gatsby”. He was introduced to the movie’s director Baz Luhrmann by the lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Luhrmann praised Jay-Z calling him “a credible and natural fit” for the job.

Here’s what Jay-Z had to say about the project:

“As soon as I spoke with Baz and Leonardo, I knew this was the right project. The Great Gatsby is that classic American story of one`s introduction to extravagance, decadence and illusion. It`s ripe for experimentation and ready to be interpreted with a modern twist. The imagination Baz brought to `Moulin Rouge` made it a masterpiece, and `Romeo + Juliet`s` score wasn`t just in the background; the music became a character. This film`s vision and direction has all the makings of an epic experience.”

Jimmy Iovine being the sly guy that he is has to get in on some of that money too… The soundtrack for the film will be released via Interscope Records.

Another big move for the Jigga man. This guy just keeps on winning huh?

New Zealand prostitutes prey on old men for financial gain

Image

Sex workers are blackmailing and exploiting elderly men in a saga of sinister and humiliating abuse.

The often unreported issue is a dark secret of elder abuse and victims come forward only when they are desperate, an expert says.

Age Concern Canterbury community health nurse Kerry Howley has worked with the victims of elder abuse for six years and has her fair share of horror stories.

Examples she gave to The Press included:

Brent, 72, had been regularly using the services of a prostitute who one day knocked on his door claiming to be carrying his baby and demanding he pay child support.

He rang Age Concern for help, saying he “physically” could not be the father of the child. When Howley rang the sex worker, threatening a paternity test after the birth, “she backed off completely and said it wasn’t his baby”.

Frank, 68, lost “pretty much everything he owned” after he befriended a prostitute. She knew where he kept his spare key and over several years she bled him of all his money, pain-killing medication and most of his furniture – even taking his recliner chair, that he was still paying off at Noel Leeming, and leaving him with only a stool in his living room.

Ivan, 79, called on a prostitute in her early 40s who now visits him at least twice a day, threatening gang affiliations if he does not hand over money.

He has lost his entire retirement fund of $100,000.

“He had quite a nice little nest egg of over $100,000 and now it’s all gone. He would have been right for retirement if this woman hadn’t come along and forced him to give it all away under influence and threats.”

Ivan went to Age Concern for help and police were contacted but he has since “gone underground” in fear of the woman’s gang connections.

“He is afraid if we stir the pot or talk to her that something terrible will happen to him so now he is suffering in silence and there is nothing we can do about it.”

All three men sought out simple affection from the women who sell sex. And it nearly cost them everything.

Elder abuse was most commonly carried out by family members, but, Howley said, “opportunistic” strangers also preyed on the elderly.

Some of those strangers were sex workers who manipulated lonely elderly men seeking affection and companionship.

Howley was aware of five elderly men who were exploited by prostitutes and said they had come forward only “once they had hit complete crisis point”.

“It is so humiliating for them to speak out that I don’t think we will ever know the full extent of this issue.”

One prostitute, known to police, had five elderly men “on the go”, four in Christchurch and one in Ashburton.

Howley believed the elderly men were contacting the women through advertisements in newspapers, not necessarily for sex but often just companionship.

The women first started taking the money for services but later used “sob stories” or intimidation.

Of the five cases she was aware of, three had threatened gang affiliations. “The men feel hurt, ashamed and deceived as they believed this person was a good person. It’s so sad.”

New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective regional co-ordinator Anna Reed was aware of sex workers abusing the elderly but said it was uncommon.

One “older” client had contacted the collective for help when a prostitute started to “blackmail” him for money and other cases involved prostitutes falsely accusing men of impregnating them, she said.

Police had been involved in a handful of cases over the years.

“Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people in all walks of life. It is rare, but it has happened and it is not just confined to the sex industry.”

Reed believed sex workers could potentially take advantage of elderly men because it was unlikely they would go to police as “it is a very embarrassing situation”.

Police Canterbury prevention manager Inspector Richard Bruce said police worked closely with Age Concern. He urged the community to be “on the look out” for any evidence of elder abuse.

Any signs of missing cash or property, excessive use of credit cards or any strangers regularly turning up on an elderly person’s doorstep should be reported.

Extinct frog hops back into the gene pool

Image

In what may be considered an early Easter miracle, an extinct species of Australian frog has begun its rise from the dead.

Australian scientists have grown embryos containing the revived DNA of the extinct gastric-brooding frog, the crucial first step in their attempt to bring a species back to life.

The team from the aptly named Lazarus project inserted the dead genetic material of the extinct amphibian into the donor eggs of another species of living frog, a process similar to the technique used to create the cloned sheep Dolly.

The eggs continued to grow into three-day-old embryos, known as blastulas.

“This is the first time this technique has been achieved for an extinct species,” said one of the project scientists, conservation biologist Michael Mahony.

While many scientists have argued it would be impossible to bring a species back from the dead like in the film Jurassic Park, the Lazarus project’s breakthrough suggested the revival of extinct species was no longer the realm of science fiction.

Over five years the team led by University of NSW palaeontologist Mike Archer painstakingly inserted DNA extracted from a frozen specimen of the bizarre gastric-brooding frog, which incubated its eggs in its stomach before giving birth through its mouth, into hundreds of donor eggs from a distant relative, the great barred frog, whose DNA had been deactivated by UV light.

In the beginning, the single cell eggs “just sat there”, said Professor Archer. “But then, all of a sudden, one of the cells divided, and then it divided again, and again.

“There were a lot of high fives around the laboratory at that point,” said Professor Archer, who was to announce the team’s achievement at the TEDxDeExtinction event in Washington on Friday.

While the embryos had yet to develop into tadpoles, genetic tests revealed the dividing cells contained the DNA of the extinct frog.

“We do expect to get this guy hopping again,” Professor Archer said.

The team has also demonstrated that the cloning technique, known as somatic nuclear cell transfer, could be used to conserve the genomes of other critically endangered species, particularly frogs, whose populations have plummeted around the world.

“We haven’t brought back the gastric-brooding frog yet but we’ve developed a tool that can stop other frogs going extinct,” said Professor Mahony, from the University of Newcastle.

But the team’s success so far did not come easily.

“It’s not as if we’re following a recipe,” said Professor Archer.

The project would have remained a science fiction fantasy were it not for the foresight of Adelaide frog researcher, Mike Tyler, who froze a gastric-brooding frog specimen before it disappeared from the wild in 1979 and became extinct in 1983.

“It’s a minor miracle that a university freezer hasn’t been turned off in a power failure,” Professor Archer said.

The leader of the technical work, Monash University reproductive biologist Andrew French, said it was also amazing the team was able to extract viable DNA from the dead frog’s cells.

The annual breeding cycle of the donor egg frog also meant the team had only a few weeks a year to conduct their experiments, Dr French said.

While the results are yet to be published, the group felt it was time to talk about their success.

“We thought it was probably time to put the flag in the sand,” said Professor Archer, who has previously directed attempts to revive the extinct Tasmanian tiger.

Nail Bomb left in toilet at Heretaunga College in New Zealand

Image

A disgruntled pupil planted a nail bomb in a toilet at Heretaunga College, forcing teachers and pupils to be evacuated from a classroom block.

The military’s bomb disposal unit was called to the Upper Hutt school after police were alerted about 1pm yesterday.

Staff found the bomb – described as a combination of Molotov cocktail and nail bomb – upright in the bowl of a toilet in the school’s Morgan Wing.

It is thought a pupil, who had earlier in the day been asked to leave the school, had returned and placed the bomb in the toilet.

The school wing containing the toilet block was evacuated while the bomb disposal unit dismantled the device, Lower Hutt Senior Sergeant Marc Clausen said.

“It was like a big-size jar with some sort of petrol in it, and taped around the outside of the jar were about eight nails, with toilet paper in the inside. The nails were sitting virtually straight, spaced around the jar, held with cellotape.

“It was taken outside and we got the bomb squad to come in and disassemble it.”

The bomb squad found the jar contained a mixture of petrol and water. It looked as if someone may have tried to flush it, Mr Clausen said.

Police spoke to a year 13 boy at the scene. No charges had been laid as of last night.

“Earlier in the day a 17-year-old male had been kicked out of school for some sort of behavioural offence. They thought it might have been the same male. But at this stage the investigation is continuing,” Mr Clausen said.

The mother of a Heretaunga College pupil said the year 13 boy had taken a “flame thrower” to school in the morning.

“Earlier he was out with a Lynx [aerosol deodorant] can and a lighter.”

That incident had apparently led to him being asked to leave school, she said.

It’s thought he later returned to the school and planted the bomb in the toilet.

Acting school principal Kiri Gill was “incredibly grateful” the bomb had not been detonated and praised students and teachers for their calm response.

Looking for a Lesson in Google’s Lavish Perks

Image

After Yahoo’s chief executive, Marissa Mayer, ordered employees working from home to show up at the office for work, there was speculation that she was emulating Google, her previous employer.

Yahoo employees should be so lucky.

Whatever else might be said about Yahoo’s workplace, it’s a long way from Google’s, as I discovered this week when I dropped in at Google’s East Coast headquarters, a vast former Port Authority shipping complex that occupies a full city block in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Yahoo set off a nationwide debate about workplace flexibility, productivity and creativity last month after a memo with the directive surfaced on the Internet. “We need to be one Yahoo, and that starts with physically being together,” read the memo from Jackie Reses, Yahoo’s director of human resources, which went viral after Kara Swisher posted it on AllThingsD.

The discussion may have been all the more heated since the ban was imposed by one of the relatively few female chief executives, one who had a nursery built near the executive suite after she gave birth last year.

Google’s various offices and campuses around the globe reflect the company’s overarching philosophy, which is nothing less than “to create the happiest, most productive workplace in the world,” according to a Google spokesman, Jordan Newman. But do its unorthodox workplaces and lavish perks yield the kind of creativity it prides itself on, and Yahoo obviously hopes to foster?

Mr. Newman, 27, who joined Google straight from Yale, and Brian Welle, a “people analytics” manager who has a Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from New York University, led me on a brisk and, at times, dizzying excursion through a labyrinth of play areas; cafes, coffee bars and open kitchens; sunny outdoor terraces with chaises; gourmet cafeterias that serve free breakfast, lunch and dinner; Broadway-theme conference rooms with velvet drapes; and conversation areas designed to look like vintage subway cars.

The library looks as if Miss Scarlet (from the board game Clue) just stepped out, leaving her incriminating noose (in the form of a necktie) prominently draped on the back of an oversize wing chair. A bookcase swings open to reveal a secret room and even more private reading area. Next to the recently expanded Lego play station, employees can scurry up a ladder that connects the fourth and fifth floors, where a fiendishly challenging scavenger hunt was in progress. Dogs strolled the corridors alongside their masters, and a cocker spaniel was napping, leashed to a pet rail, outside one of the dining areas.

Google lets many of its hundreds of software engineers, the core of its intellectual capital, design their own desks or work stations out of what resemble oversize Tinker Toys. Some have standing desks, a few even have attached treadmills so they can walk while working. Employees express themselves by scribbling on walls. The result looks a little chaotic, like some kind of high-tech refugee camp, but Google says that’s how the engineers like it.

“We’re trying to push the boundaries of the workplace,” Mr. Newman said, in what seemed an understatement.

In keeping with a company built on information, this seeming spontaneity is anything but. Everything has been researched and is backed by data. In one of the open kitchen areas, Dr. Welle pointed to an array of free food, snacks, candy and beverages. “The healthy choices are front-loaded,” he said. “We’re not trying to be mom and dad. Coercion doesn’t work. The choices are there. But we care about our employees’ health, and our research shows that if people cognitively engage with food, they make better choices.”

So the candy (M&Ms, plain and peanut; Tcho brand luxury chocolate bars, chewing gum, Life Savers) is in opaque ceramic jars that sport prominent nutritional labels. Healthier snacks (almonds, peanuts, dried kiwi and dried banana chips) are in transparent glass jars. In coolers, sodas are concealed behind translucent glass. A variety of waters and juices are immediately visible. “Our research shows that people consume 40 percent more water if that’s the first thing they see,” Dr. Welle said. (Note to Mayor Bloomberg: Perhaps New York City should hide supersize sodas rather than ban them.)

Craig Nevill-Manning, a New Zealand native and Google’s engineering director in Manhattan, was the impetus behind the company’s decision to hire a cadre of engineers in New York, and he led an exodus to Chelsea from what was a small outpost near Times Square. “I lobbied for this building,” he told me. “I love the neighborhood. You can live across the street. There are bars and restaurants.”

He showed me a map of the city with dots indicating where each Google employee lives. They’re heavily concentrated in Manhattan below 34th Street, Brooklyn and the Upper West Side, most within walking distance of Chelsea or a short subway ride away. “We inherited the informal work environment — the casual dress, the flexible hours — from Silicon Valley, but we adapted it to the East Coast urban environment,” he said. After the dot-com collapse in 2000, Manhattan was largely written off as a technology center. Since Google’s move, Chelsea is mentioned in the same breath as Silicon Valley. Google has turned over 22,000 square feet of its space, rent-free, to Cornell until its new technology campus can be built on Roosevelt Island.

“The philosophy is very simple,” Mr. Nevill-Manning said. “Google’s success depends on innovation and collaboration. Everything we did was geared towards making it easy to talk. Being on one floor here removed psychological barriers to interacting, and we’ve tried to preserve that.” Among innovations that sprang from seemingly chance office encounters are the Google Art Project, which is putting thousands of museum works online, and enhancements to the company’s AdSense and AdWords advertising platforms. Razor scooters make it easy to get around the huge floors (each covers five acres), which offer every conceivable gathering space, from large open spaces to tiny nooks with whimsical furniture. It was Mr. Nevill-Manning’s idea to install the ladder connecting floors, now that Google is too large to fit on one. He said he wouldn’t go so far as to say cost is no object, but software engineers “are incredibly productive on a square foot basis,” he said. “Their value is enormous. It doesn’t cost that much to make them happy.”

Allison Mooney, 32, joined Google two years ago from the advertising giant Omnicom Group, and the difference is “night and day,” she said. “I came here from the New York agency model, where you work constantly, 24/7. You answer every e-mail, nights and weekends. Here, you don’t have to show you’re working, or act like you’re working. The culture here is to shut down on weekends. People have a life.”

And the perks, she added, are “amazing.” In the course of our brief conversation, she mentioned subsidized massages (with massage rooms on nearly every floor); free once-a-week eyebrow shaping; free yoga and Pilates classes; a course she took called “Unwind: the art and science of stress management”; a course in advanced negotiation taught by a Wharton professor; a health consultation and follow-up with a personal health counselor; an author series and an appearance by the novelist Toni Morrison; and a live interview of Justin Bieber by Jimmy Fallon in the Google office.

This in addition to a full array of more traditional employee benefits. Curiously, there’s some exercise equipment but no fitness center (Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. has multiple state-of-the-art fitness centers) because Manhattan employees said they preferred joining health clubs to exercising with colleagues. (Google subsidizes the gym memberships.) And there’s no open bar, although alcohol is served at T.G.I.F. parties (now held on Thursdays), one of which featured a dating game.

After my visit, I spoke to Teresa Amabile, a business administration professor at Harvard Business School and co-author of “The Progress Principle,” about creativity at work, and told her I had just been to Google. “Isn’t it fantastic?” she said. Some of her former students work there, and “they feel very, very fortunate to be there,” she said. As to the broader relationship between the workplace and creativity, “there’s some evidence that great physical space enhances creativity,” she said. “The theory is that open spaces that are fun, where people want to be, facilitate idea exchange. I’ve watched people interact at Google and you see a cross-fertilization of ideas.” That said, she added, “there isn’t a lot of research to support this. And none of this matters unless people feel they have meaningful work and are making progress at it. In over 30 years of research, I’ve found that people do their most creative work when they’re motivated by the work itself.”

Ben Waber, who has a Ph.D. from M.I.T. and is the author of “People Analytics,” is, at 29, the median age of Google employees. His company, Sociometric Solutions in Boston, uses data to assess workplace interactions. “Google has really been out front in this field,” he said. “They’ve looked at the data to see how people are collaborating. Physical space is the biggest lever to encourage collaboration. And the data are clear that the biggest driver of performance in complex industries like software is serendipitous interaction. For this to happen, you also need to shape a community. That means if you’re stressed, there’s someone to help, to take up the slack. If you’re surrounded by friends, you’re happier, you’re more loyal, you’re more productive. Google looks at this holistically. It’s the antithesis of the old factory model, where people were just cogs in a machine.”

Both experts were critical of Yahoo’s plan to force employees into the office. “If you’re spying on them, monitoring them or coercing them, it will create a poisonous atmosphere,” Dr. Waber said.

Professor Amabile added: “Google doesn’t have to force people. Marissa Mayers’s mistake may have been not being more clear about the need to be together and to experience creative excitement. Taking a hard line is likely to have negative effects.”

A Yahoo spokeswoman responded: “We don’t discuss internal matters. This isn’t a broad industry view on working from home. This is about what is right for Yahoo, right now.”

It should probably be obvious at this juncture, but Google doesn’t require employees to work from the office. It doesn’t even keep track of who’s there. The notion seems to have never occurred to anyone. “I don’t think we’ve ever had a policy on that,” Mr. Newman said, but “we do expect employees to figure out a work schedule with their team and manager. It’s not a free-for-all.”

For a company with Google’s largess — and the profit margins that make it possible — it’s hardly necessary to require employees to be at the office. “People want to come in,” Ms. Mooney said. On average, she estimates she spends nine hours a day there, five days a week. She mentioned that she recently took a day off — and ended up at the office.

“I live in a studio apartment,” she explained. “And I don’t have free food.”

Brisbane hotels left empty on weekends

Image

Brisbane is struggling to get a date on the weekend.

Monday to Thursday is the busiest time for Brisbane’s hotels, boosted by growth in the city’s functions, seminar and conferences.

On those days hotels in Brisbane’s CBD are 80 per cent to 85 per cent filled.

However hotel occupancy rates drop markedly between Friday and Sunday when the “corporate market” goes home.

On those days hotels are just 55 per cent to 60 per cent full, according to the Queensland Hotels Association.

On the weekends Brisbane – which this week announced plans to muscle its way into the five-star hotel ranks – is left with its art galleries and sporting fixtures to draw a crowd.

Queensland Hotels Association accommodation division manager Judy Hill said hotel owners in Brisbane’s CBD were all aware of the problem.

“If they could get 65 per cent occupancy on Sunday night, they would be very, very happy,” she said.

Work to tackle the problem has been underway for at least 12 months, but the problem was laid bare at a business breakfast in Brisbane this week.

Part of the problem was attributed to the size of the state and the mix of attractions up and down the coast.

A report from Brisbane Marketing to this week’s Brisbane City Council meeting a group of events including the NRL All Stars game, the 2012 Bledisloe Cup, the State of Origin and the Brisbane Festival attracted one million people and generated $23 million.

However conventions in the past year packed out 439,920 “delegate days” and generated more than $266.6 million.

Ms Hill said to even up the score, there should be a focus on linking accommodation packages to weekend events.

“In the past it has been events like the Valentino exhibit at GoMA,” she said.

“That created great occupancy rates for hotels over the weekend.”

Ms Hill said Melbourne had set the benchmark for turning weekend events into weekend getaways.

Daniel Gschwind agreed Greater Brisbane’s “Great Event” concept was drawing extra weekend trade for sports and cultural events.

“We do know they work. In June we will have the Lions tour and that will demonstrate how effective they are in driving business, particularly over the weekend,” he said.

“We have only come to the arts scene a bit later than some of the other cities, but we have gone into it with some determination.

“And GoMA has lifted us significantly.”

Mr Gschwind said GoMA, the Queensland Museum, the Queensland Art Gallery and all the performing arts centres had “come into their own”.

“They are now managed for success, which means they are now held to account for how they are able to attract people from interstate, intrastate and in some cases even from overseas,” he said.

“And I think to some degree that is the opportunity that is out there for us to fully harvest.”

However, Brisbane has stiff competition from rival destinations.

“Brisbane is competing against the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, the Whitsundays, for example,” Ms Hill said.

“Because of the size of the state we are often competing against other cities.”

Maternity leave breaches alleged

Image

Pregnant women and mothers returning to work from maternity leave are facing illegal discrimination and losing their jobs.

In the past two years the Human Rights Commission (HRC) has received 102 complaints on pregnancy and employment, with 37 about redundancy, parental leave, and being declined a job because of pregnancy.

A further 36 of the complaints related to changed working conditions both before and after parental leave.

The Herald asked for the figures following a UK poll which found one in seven women lost their job while on maternity leave.

The figures only “scratch the surface of a wider problem” according to Labour Party women’s affairs spokeswoman Sue Moroney.

Ms Moroney said pregnant women and mothers were one of the most vulnerable parts of the workforce and lodging a formal complaint about this type of sex discrimination was daunting. “It’s not an easy thing to do so I would suggest the number of complainants who have made it that far are just the tip of the iceberg.”

She received many complaints from woman who had requested part-time work on return from parental leave but were forced back into full-time jobs by inflexible employers.

The commission published Employers’ Guidelines for the Prevention of Pregnancy Discrimination in 2002 because of the increasing number of complaints and inquiries from women and employers.

In the foreword, then Chief Commissioner Rosslyn Noonan said the HRC had been receiving complaints for almost 15 years from workers claiming they had been unfairly treated because of their pregnancies.

High-profile employment lawyer Mai Chen of Chen Palmer said she hid her pregnancy for five months because of the culture and attitudes towards child-bearing women in corporate society.

“When I got pregnant I did not want my competitors saying to my clients ‘Oh she’s pregnant so she’s probably going to take off on you’.

“So I decided the better thing to do was to hide it. And I really regret the fact that I had to do that because I was quite sick through it.”

A human rights advocate who once worked at the United Nations on discrimination against women, Ms Chen said there needed to be a culture change to stamp out discrimination.

“There are hundreds of women who have not returned to the workforce because of this problem and it’s an enormous waste.

“I look forward to the time when society is changed so that we are able to allow women to go through those experiences without being damaged.”

Galia BarHava-Monteith, a founding director of Professionelle Charitable Foundation, a group supporting working women, said discrimination against pregnant women and working mothers reflected bad management.

She said employers should plan for the woman’s return, keep her involved in big changes including inviting her to training sessions, and plan for the transition back to work allowing for flexible hours.

New mum felt pressure to leave her job

When Nikki Collins became pregnant with her son Zac in 2010, she suffered from terrible morning sickness which lasted all day.

She persevered at her job in Christchurch despite being admitted to hospital.

Her boss, already a father himself and with a pregnant wife, was unsympathetic.

“He was the most unsupportive person and had a bad attitude, where he should have been understanding.”

Miss Collins used all her sick and annual leave, delegated work to staff, did paperwork from home and reduced her hours from 50 to 30 a week to cope.

“I ended up taking maternity leave early, which he was happy with.”

After Zac was born finances dictated that Miss Collins return to work when he was 3 months old.

“I wanted to increase my hours but when I asked for my old full-time job to come back into play he changed the hours from days to early starts and often late finishes including weekends, which I rarely worked before falling pregnant.”

These were times Miss Collins did not have childcare available. “So I resigned and he paid me out and I left. I was never offered another role with the company with better hours. It was a take it or leave it situation.”

Miss Collins said she was upset, deflated and angry at the outcome but didn’t have the energy to make a formal complaint.

Now though, the 25-year-old has another full-time “dream” job with supportive colleagues and Zac, 2, is thriving at preschool.

“Looking back it was the best thing I have ever done. Employers with pregnant staff need to take the time to listen and put themselves in their employees’ shoes for a day.

“Same goes for employers without kids. They have no idea what it’s like and would want to give up after a week of what we do.”

The law

* An employee returning from leave is entitled to the same role she had before.

* An employer must ensure returning workers are not given less substantial conditions.

* Employees cannot be dismissed because they take parental leave, unless there is good reason.

‘Spring Breakers’ & Opening Ceremony Team Up For Clothing Line

Image

We’ve already got “Spring Breakers” fatigue and the movie hasn’t even opened yet. But the buzzed-about flick, starring bikini-clad teeny boppers like Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens and a gun-toting James Franco, is about to get even more hype with its very own Opening Ceremony collaboration.

The New York-based retailer is partnering with “Spring Breakers” for a line of “fun-in-the-sun essentials,” Women’s Wear Daily reports. The line will include sweatpants, beach towels, crop tops and, of course, bikinis (but no fake tattoos and guns-as-accessories, as far as we know).

The designs, which are bound to be bright and slightly NSFW (think pot leaves, the slogan “DTF”), were conceived by Heidi Bivens, “Spring Breakers” costume designer, and artist Todd James a.k.a. REAS.

Surprised that Opening Ceremony, a favorite among the downtown hipster crowd, is teaming up with a Selena Gomez-headlined project? Don’t be: The movie is much edgier fare than most people realize, with enough violence and bared skin to earn a R rating. (In fact, director Harmony Korine has come under fire for casting his nearly-teenage stars in intensely sexualized scenes.)

But edginess alone by no means guarantees a successful clothing line. Think the Spring Breakers x Opening Ceremony collab will be worth perusing? Read more at WWD.com and head to the store on March 22 when the collection debuts.

Louis injured knee

Image

Louis got a little bit over-excited during One Directions Belfast concert injuring his knee during the Irish leg of the Take Me Home tour.

Obviously upset that his injury has left him having to hobble through the band’s songs, he apologised to his fans on his Twitter account.

‘Ah well f**k it . I apologise if I’m not jumping around on stage as much , stupid knee ! #kneedtogetbetter ( terrible joke),’ he wrote, cracking a joke in the process.

Not long before Louis had clearly been feeling sorry for himself, writing: ‘Knee hurts :(,’ before adding yet another sad face for added drama.

Lindsay appalled by Bieber

Image

Justin Bieber is a naive little loudmouth who will pay for his meanness … so vows Lindsay Lohan.

Lindsay was “appalled” when she read what Bieber had written about her in his Instagram diatribe … in which he said, “… to those comparing me to Lindsay Lohan look at her 2012 tax statements ;)”.

Bieber quickly deleted the insult, but Lindsay is telling friends … it’s too little, too late … and “karma” will bite him in the ass.

Sick Ellen DeGeneres delays Australia trip

Ellen Degeneres has delayed her highly anticipated trip to Australia as she recovers from the flu. Photo / AP

Ellen DeGeneres will not be flying into Australia this weekend as expected and will instead remain in her Los Angeles sickbed.

Warner Brothers, the production company behind The Ellen DeGeneres Show, has confirmed the star will now arrive in Sydney at the end of next week rather than the reported Sunday arrival.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show will delay its arrival into Australia by a few days while Ellen recovers from the flu,” said a statement reported in Fairfax Media.

“Ellen will meet her fans in Sydney later next week, and will then come to Melbourne.

“More announcements about the trip will be made in coming days.”

The Emmy-winning chat show host had already cancelled episodes of her LA talk show due to ill health during the week, including her final show ahead of her scheduled departure to Australia.

The delayed plans of the 55-year-old TV personality and her wife, Australian actress Portia de Rossi, have sent social diaries into a spin.

The couple were expected to attend a black tie cocktail party in Melbourne on Tuesday, among other social engagements.

DeGeneres was also reported to meet Prime Minister Julia Gillard during the day to discuss the highly emotive issue of gay marriage.

The chat show host said she was trying to get herself better before her big trip.

“Trying to get over a bug before I go to Australia. Nobody wants to be down under the weather,” DeGeneres tweeted on Tuesday.

“Between my humidifier and Portia making me tea non-stop, there’s so much steam coming from our house people think we picked the new Pope,” she posted in a tweet a day earlier.

DeGeneres’ Australian adventure has been 12 months in the making.

‘Like children to an ice cream van’: Watch shocking moment drug addicts flock to dealer’s car

Previously unseen CCTV footage shows the brazen dealer park his car in the middle of a residential road, in broad daylight just yards from a nursery

Image

This is the shocking moment dozens of drug users flock to a drug dealer’s car in broad daylight like “excited children pouncing on an ice cream van”.

Previously unseen CCTV footage shows the brazen dealer park his car in the middle of a residential road, just yards from a nursery, in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham.

Seconds later, a swarm of addicts, many dressed in dark hooded clothing, are seen racing towards the vehicle.

Terrifyingly, as the dealer peddles Class A drugs, a mum can be seen pushing a pram on the opposite side of the street.

The footage was captured by a fed-up resident who said he was sick of the area he had lived in for 20 years being blighted by drugs.

Image

West Midlands Police have now released the footage after 29 men were jailed for drugs offences as part of ‘Operation No Deal’.

The CCTV footage will be shown on BBC1 at 11am on Friday as part of the ‘Caught Red Handed’ series.

West Midlands police detective chief inspector Nick Walton, said: “You’d imagine drug transactions are carried out in a discrete manner but the footage we obtained shows around 30 people rush towards the dealer’s car in broad daylight.

“I’d never seen anything like it in my police career and it was clear we needed to take decisive action to tackle the problem.

“No one should be expected to put up with drug dealing on their doorstep: it attracts an undesirable element and is invariably linked to wider criminality.”
