Age no boundary for superstar Slater

Image

SURFING legend Kelly Slater believes there is no reason he can not continue to push the limits of his sport as he hits an age at which most professional sportsmen are considering retirement.

The motivation of the 11-time world champion was widely questioned heading into the season but Slater seems keen to continue to dominate through what he regards as a golden age on tour.

Now 41, Slater is being pushed by a new wave of surfers including John John Florence and Gabriel Medina — men less than half his age.

It’s something he calls a “weird dynamic” but one that has also pushed him to new limits.

“(The talent) has spread out to the point where guys are older and the average age on tour is the oldest it’s ever been,” Slater said of a series in which Gold Coaster Joel Parkinson claimed his first world title last year at 31.

“I don’t see why guys should get worse as they get older,” Slater said.

“Maybe by the time you’re 50 you really do start having chronic injuries if you don’t deal with them, if you don’t eat well and you don’t get enough sleep.

“But also it’s a mental game, there’s a lot of keeping your mind open, you have to be willing to move with the changes.

“When you’re not looking ahead to guys older than you any more and you’re looking to guys younger than you for inspiration, it’s a weird dynamic but you have to be open to that,” he said.

Slater admitted losing the world title to Parkinson had given him added motivation for this year.

“But (losing) is part of life.

“I think I’m mature enough now to enjoy what comes with it. If there wasn’t heartbreak in things, there’d be no glory — they come together and someone’s going to experience one and someone’s going to experience the other.”

While Parkinson’s success has fired Slater, so too has the new generation of surfers.

“They’re amazing. Their base to their surfing is much more radical that guys my age,” he said.

“We were all learning from all the carve guys … and now it’s airs, rotations, grabs, flips and that’s what these kids are all looking to — day in and day out.

“That’s the standard now.”

But Slater seems determined to stay on tour to hold his own.

“I’d like the opportunity to stick around if I want to. If I get a few results this year and re-qualify, we’ll see,” he said.

“I don’t always like the pressure of the competition, like when there’s three minutes to go and you need an 8.3 and there’s not many good waves. It’s so stressful, I really hate that feeling.

“But the payoff for putting in your time and paying your dues and working at something and having success with it, it’s valuable on a personal level.”

Slater was forced to wait to compete again yesterday, with organisers calling a lay day for both the Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro.

Action is expected to get under way again today, with the possibility of a women’s champion being crowned this afternoon if the Roxy Pro semi-finals begin at Rainbow Bay this morning.

Steph Gilmore shows what lies beneath

Image

IT may have been Joel Parkinson’s night but five-time world champion Steph Gilmore stole the show.

Gilmore made sure her presence was known at the ASP World Surfing Awards last night, arriving an hour late, alone, in a striking red lace number with nothing but black underwear underneath.

Gilmore said she had picked the dress especially and was “feeling great”.

“It’s by a label called Lover and I absolutely love it — I thought why not,” she said. “I wanted to be bold and feel sexy.

“The awards night is a great chance for us to all catch up and see each other dressed up before the serious stuff starts again.”

Gilmore said she was ready for the Roxy Pro, but was disappointed that Snapper Rocks was ruled out for the first week due to severe erosion.

“It is a favourite for a lot of us Gold Coasters and we hope to be back at Snapper for the end of the comp,” she said.

ASP Men’s World Champion Joel Parkinson and best mate Mick Fanning were still on a high from the Tweed surfer’s rise to the No.1 spot.

Parkinson, who had battled to get to the top spot for the past five years, said he was looking forward to doing it all again in 2013.

“I know what I have to do and I’m just going to get out there and do it,” he said.

Meanwhile Fanning said he was so proud of his mate.

“It was the pinnacle he needed to achieve and he did it,” he said.

“It was an amazing day that was really emotional for us both.

“I will be proud to see him get up there tonight.”

Runner-up Kelly Slater, in a brief media interview after missing a press conference earlier that day, said he was just hanging to catch some waves.

“I’ve just been focusing on surfing and am looking forward to getting back out there to compete on the Gold Coast,” he said.

The Coast proved its surfing prowess on the night with Currumbin local Jack Freestone, 20, taking out junior champion.

The only No.1 spot not to go to a Gold Coaster was longboard champion.

The honour went to American Taylor Jensen.

It will be the last time for many of the surfers to let their hair down before competition starts at the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro tomorrow.

Remember the girl every guy wanted from the hit T.V. show Boy Meets World? Well Topanga is all grown up now. Covers Maxim Magazine

Image

Danielle Fishel hit the t.v. scene at the age of 12 as Topanga Lawrence in 1993 and immediately stole Americas heart.   Topanga was a very intelligent bubbly girl, with very piercing facial features that had every guy drooling over her, and every girl wanting to be just like her. Now at the age of 31, Danielle strips down for Maxim magazine and this girl has got it going on! Also in a a few excerpts Danielle explains where the name Topanga came from, Competing with Kelly Kapowski from Saved By The Bell for 90′s hottest girl, and what the Boy Meets World show has done for her life.

Image

Where the heck did the name Topanga come from?
Michael Jacobs, who created Boy Meets World, says he was driving down the highway when production called and said, “We need a name for this character!” He happened to be driving past Topanga Canyon, so he said, “Topanga.” He says that if they had called him two miles later, I would’ve been named Canoga, which is the next exit.

Have you ever met anyone named Topanga?
I’ve met five little girls named Topanga, all after me, and I’ve heard about many more. People will tweet me, and I’ve had family members who have met other Topangas. It’s crazy and it’s flattering, but I never know what to say when they’re showing me their beautiful little girls. I’m like, “Really? Topanga!?”

Why do you think so many people feel an attachment to Boy Meets World?
We were in people’s family rooms every Friday for seven years. When I watch old episodes, it’s like watching home movies, so I imagine that other people feel the same way. ABC’s TGIF lineup was probably the one time a week when parents and kids all watched TV together.

Did you party with the rest of the TGIF crew, like Urkel or the Olsen twins?
One time we were all on a private jet going to Disney World, and my mom, dad, and brother were also with me. We had these four seats facing each other with curtains, so we had our own little private family area. Anyway, we were trying to take a nap, and all of a sudden Bob Saget walks down the aisle, rips open our curtain, and shouts, “Do you guys have any coke?!” Then he looks my dad in the eye, laughs, and closes the curtain. My mom was like, “What was that all about?”

Did you ever meet the kids from Saved By the Bell and throw down with Kelly Kapowski for the title of “Hottest ’90s Girl”?
No, I don’t think I ever met Tiffani Thiessen! But I can tell you Kelly Kapowski was my first-ever girl crush. I remember watching her and thinking, Nobody in the world could possibly be as beautiful as she is. She’s still stunning.

Soulja Boy slams MTV’s hottest MC’s list

Image

Soulja Boy took to Instagram and Twitter to air some shots towards MTV and their always controversial list-making abilities. He accuses them of playing favorites and basicallys calls the latest “Hottest MCs” effort being fugazi.

Although many can argue about and pick apart the list if it isn’t to their liking. Can’t help but be a bit confused about Soulja Boy being mad at it though – did he seriously expect to be on it or something?

Fake prince’s belongings fetch top prices

Image

Hophepa Morehu-Barlow used to claim to be a Tahitian prine.

One man’s misfortune is another’s gain and in between is a tidy profit for the Queensland government.

The auction of the 800-plus seized belongings of the fake Tahitian prince Joel Morehu-Barlow has been a huge success.

More than 500 people crammed into the inner south auction house in Brisbane, and hundreds more waited outside for a marathon day, which was expected to run for more than 10 hours.

Image

Midway through, $300,000 had been made, four times more than expected.

One of the highest selling items was a Bang and Olufsen television which went for $55,000, a whopping $25,000 more than the set asking price, but still well below market value.

A life-size horse lamp was expected to fetch a good price and a Hermes saddle raised $5,500.

A Chanel black wristwatch with diamond was sold for $10,000, up to $7,000 more than estimated.

A Louis Vuitton surf board went for $7,000 and some bidders scored fur hats for $350.

The auction house was Leonard Joel and its managing director John Albrecht told AAP part of the success was down to the eclectic taste of the fake prince.

Mr Albrecht said 7,000 people placed absentee bids, an unheard of number, and the auction was watched live online in 45 countries.

He pushed to have the auction in Queensland despite the widespread interest.

“I don’t think it would have been as exciting if was taken out of its home,” he said.

Bidder Anthony Nguyen bought a Louis Vuitton leather jacket and a Hugo Boss suit for what he calls a steal.

He said he was lucky to find a smaller size that fit him.

“I think he must have put on weight with all that money,” he said.

“I know I would.”

The man with the eclectic taste, Morehu-Barlow, a former purchasing officer, is set to plead guilty and be sentenced on March 19 for defrauding the state government of $16 million.

He claimed ties to the Tahitian royalty to justify his lavish lifestyle.

All profits from the sale will be given to Queensland Health.

Leonardo took 27 takes to kiss Joanna Lumley

Image

Leonardo DiCaprio took 27 takes to kiss Joanna Lumley in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’.

The 66-year-old actress – who is 28 years older than the ‘Titanic’ star – revealed the Hollywood hunk was so nervous about locking lips with her for Martin Scorsese’s new crime drama movie that it took him a while to get into his groove.

She said: “Unfortunately, with the kissing he took a while getting used to it. So I was like, ‘Try, try again’. There were 27 takes!”

But Joanna didn’t appear to mind the 38-year-old star needed so many attempts to kiss her on set, and revealed she loves being regarded as a “National Treasure” in Britain because she can get away without doing certain things.

Speaking on ‘Alan Carr’s Chatty Man’ show, she added: “I do play the National Treasure card at home. Everything is done for me at home.

“I love the words National Treasure as I have been banging around the block.

“It is like looking for a parking space — you go round and round.

“You do good parts and bad parts. People remember you and you do more shows.

“You are like an old car and people still like you and say, ‘Oh look, it’s the old car’.”

Chris Brown fumes over Drake’s “Started from the bottom”

Image

Chris Brown became enraged when Drake’s song played in a club.

The ‘Yeah 3x’ hitmaker reportedly hijacked the microphone and broke into an expletive-filled rant at the Emerson Theatre nightclub in Hollywood, when the DJ played his rival rapper’s latest song, ‘Started from the Bottom’.

The singer – who was involved in a club brawl with Drake last year – took offence to the song choice, sticking his middle finger in the air and declared: “The DJ can play this s**t, but I want you all to know… F**k Drake!”

A source at the club told the New York Daily News: “Chris was out of his mind and looked possessed by the devil.”

Revellers waved middle fingers back at the 23-year-old musician, while others unsuccessfully tried to remove the microphone from Chris’ grip as he then gave an impromptu performance for 30 minutes, rapping and singing some of his hits including ‘As You Were’ and ‘Turn Up the Music’.

The latest outburst comes just days after Chris lashed out at a valet who charged him $10 for parking outside PINZ bowling alley in Studio City, California.

The ‘Beautiful People’ singer reportedly told the attendant: “F**k ten dollars”, before threateningly adding, “We gonna turn this whole thing on out.”

The singer also allegedly threw his long time bodyguard Big Pat off a private jet during a pit stop in Bermuda on Wednesday.

An airport worker said: “His plane came in, got services and everything was finishing and they were getting ready to leave.

“Then there was a stall. The security guard [Big Pat] got off first. He was standing outside talking to the pilot. Then Chris Brown and another guy came off. They had to come inside to customs.

“They then went outside to have a cigarette. The security guard came inside [an airport building] and said he wasn’t getting back on the plane.”

Disney stars throw off their past in ‘Spring Breakers’

Image

Selena Gomez, left, and Vanessa Hudgens.

Image

Ms. Gomez in “Spring Breakers.”

That R-rated film, which not-so-coincidentally arrives in theaters on Friday, signals an attempt by Ms. Gomez, 20, to transition to a more grown-up image. And she is not alone: “Spring Breakers,” written and directed byHarmony Korine (“Kids”), also stars Vanessa Hudgens, a starlet who is equally eager — maybe more — to leave behind her squeaky-clean work in Disney’s “High School Musical” series.

“Disney is a machine, and I’m grateful for it, but I feel like being part of that environment made me crave the reaction from other projects even more,” Ms. Gomez said. “Creatively this is where I wanted to go.”

Ditto for Ms. Hudgens, 24. “I want people to look at me not as that girl from ‘High School Musical,’ but as an actress they admire,” she said. “With ‘Spring Breakers’ I’m looking for a reaction for sure. I want to shock people.”

Uh-oh.

The transition out of children’s entertainment is perhaps Hollywood’s trickiest professional maneuver. Changing an acting style is hard; children’s shows tend to turn on “overdone, hammy, jokey performances,” noted Paul Schneider, chairman of Boston University’s film and television department. And the public doesn’t make it easy, said Jeffrey McCall, a media studies professor at DePauw University, adding, “We project images onto entertainers, and we are hesitant to change those impressions.”

If Ms. Gomez and Ms. Hudgens wanted to leave their good-girl personas behind, they found the right movie. “Spring Breakers,” which also stars James Franco, 34, as a white-trash rapper and drug dealer (just a week after he’ll be seen in Disney’s “Oz the Great and Powerful”), is “Natural Born Killers” meets an MTV reality show.

Mr. Korine’s film follows four college students who are desperate to escape their everyday lives. They rob a restaurant to pay for their trip, land in some trouble once in Florida and get bailed out of jail by Mr. Franco’s metal-toothed brute, Alien. Ms. Gomez plays Faith — hint, hint — who goes along with it to a point, despite her religious upbringing. Around the time the women start wearing hot-pink ski masks and wielding AK-47’s Faith decides enough is enough, leaving her friends to descend deeper into a depraved fever dream.

In one extended scene likely to get attention Ms. Hudgens’s character, Candy, holds a loaded gun while Mr. Franco’s thug simulates fellatio on it

“It was an amazing opportunity for us,” Ms. Hudgens said. “Selena and I are both young, finding our footing, wanting to grow.” Ms. Gomez added, “I’ve never been part of a movie I would watch over and over again, and I’m really proud of it.”

Mr. Korine, 40, whose films include “Trash Humpers” and “Julien Donkey-Boy,” said he deliberately cast actresses with saccharine images to make a point about the underbelly of what he calls “pop mythology” — the extreme party that many young people dream about and corporations cash in on. Ashley Benson, 23, known for “Pretty Little Liars” on ABC Family, a Disney-owned channel, also plays a leading role.

“It was a conceptual stunt,” Mr. Korine said, referring to the casting. “Well, it wasn’t just a conceptual stunt. That’s a bonus. If you didn’t know who these girls are, that they came to my movie representing something, the film would still be the same.”

Rarely has a movie arrived with so many additional agendas. Ms. Gomez, Ms. Hudgens and Ms. Benson are all working to “age up” their images, to use Hollywood lingo. Mr. Korine, tired of making itty-bitty experimental movies that (almost) nobody sees, wants a taste of the mainstream. Several critics, reviewing “Spring Breakers” as it has bounced along the festival circuit, have used the word “sellout” to describe the film.

Is Mr. Korine “effectively satirizing” vapid MTV exploitation shows, asked Guy Lodge in a Variety review, “or merely complicit in the glossy meretriciousness of the culture they represent?”

Ms. Gomez and Ms. Hudgens have both been cycled through the celebrity tabloids for their romantic relationships. (Ms. Gomez has dated Justin Bieber, and Ms. Hudgens and Zac Efron were once a couple.) And both actresses are seeking to change how moviegoers and studios see them.

But they find themselves at different professional stages and thus lean into “Spring Breakers” with varying intensity.

Ms. Hudgens, who became a star in 2006 by playing the brainy romantic lead (opposite Mr. Efron) in the “High School Musical” movies, is more removed than Ms. Gomez from Disney. But she has not had a lot of success since. She tried a romance called”Beastly” and the fantasy thriller “Sucker Punch”; both flopped badly. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” was a success, but she played only a supporting role.

So she needed something extreme.

“I’m so normal and boring in real life, which is part of what made this part so fun,” said Ms. Hudgens, fiddling with a white rose she had plucked out of an arrangement in the hotel’s lobby. “I’m more the type to stay home with a cheese plate and a glass of white wine.” (After “Spring Breakers,” Ms. Hudgens will star in Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete Kills,” a bloody action movie about a Mexican arms dealer.)

While younger, Ms. Gomez is the bigger star. “Wizards of Waverly Place” ranks as one of the larger hits in Disney Channel history. She has a clothing line called Dream Out Loud, a perfume (marketed as “the scented embodiment of the star herself: fresh and sweet with warmth from within”) and more than 40 million Facebook “likes.” Next month Ms. Gomez will release a single from her coming fourth CD, which will be distributed by Disney.

But her movie career has so far been mediocre, to be generous. “Ramona and Beezus” was a dud in 2010. The PG-rated “Monte Carlo” the following year was a bit stronger, taking in $39.7 million worldwide. But family films were clearly not a promising road for Ms. Gomez.

So in “Spring Breakers” she parties hard in a Day-Glo bikini and has a disturbing scene with Mr. Franco in which he, his hair in corn rows, fondles her face at length and coos that she “looks about 15.” But Faith also bolts before the killing starts, about 45 minutes in. Ms. Gomez said she would not have taken, say, the role Ms. Hudgens plays, because it would have amounted to the kind of slash-and-burn approach to career growth that Miley Cyrus failed to pull off.

“It’s as far as I could go at this point in my life and career,” she said. “It’s me kind of taking baby steps.” Ms. Gomez added, “But I know that people will judge my involvement in the movie as a whole. I’m prepared to accept that.”

Disney had no comment about “Spring Breakers.” But executives there said privately they doubted that Ms. Gomez, who will headline the Radio Disney Music Awards on April 27, knew exactly what she was getting into.

The young actress refuted that notion, saying that her mother, who is also her manager, was the one who suggested the part.

“My mom is a Harmony fan and read the script,” she said. Ms. Gomez watched Mr. Korine’s movies with her mother and discussed the role with her agent. “I understood why they thought it could be an interesting choice,” she said. She flew to Nashville, where Mr. Korine lives, and auditioned for him in his living room, running lines with his wife, Rachel Korine, 26, who ended up joining the film in a lead role.

“Harmony said, ‘Are you ready to leave your world behind for now and just come be with me and the girls?’ I just said, ‘I’m definitely ready and willing,’” Ms. Gomez recalled. “He looked past what I seem to be publicly and really took a chance on me.”

Ms. Gomez seems a tad tired of discussing “Spring Breakers” and its effect on her image. “It’s the obvious media angle,” she said with a sigh. (One of her next movies is the dark comedy “Behaving Badly,” which has been described as “’Ferris Bueller’ on crack.”)

She also echoed what Disney executives have long said when their stars move on and adopt sexier personas: Viewers, even young ones, can differentiate between actresses and the roles they play. Of people criticizing her for “Spring Breakers,” Ms. Gomez said, “I think they’re not giving my fans enough credit.”

Still, she said she was taken aback to see so many “Wizards of Waverly Place” devotees at the Toronto International Film Festival screening for Mr. Korine’s film.

“The first four rows were girls from 17 to 20,” she said, “and they all had our posters and my ‘Wizards’ book, and I was like ‘Oh, my goodness!’”

Weakened Blues fall in thriller

Bulls 28
Blues 21

Sir John Kirwan was expecting a physical challenge from the Bulls and he got one.

The Blues coach also hoped his new boys would handle the challenge at Eden Park today after he rang the changes following a perfect start to the season.

That didn’t quite happen – No8 Peter Saili, lock Culum Retallick and first-five Chris Noakes carrying niggles and cooling their heels despite Kirwan saying they could have played if necessary. An added factor in the curious selection process is the fact the Blues have a bye next weekend.

This, though, was a thrilling game in the afternoon sun, the match jumping into life in the second half after a static opening 40 minutes in which the Blues made too many mistakes, although they had their chances too.

Rene Ranger’s individual try with four minutes to go narrowed the gap to 25-21 and set the match up for a barnstorming finish.

Although they responded well to their early setbacks, there was a sense of what might have been for the Blues.

Another couple of eyebrow-raising decisions from Kirwan was his replacing of halfback Piri Weepu and prop Charlie Faumuina, just as the Blues were beginning to get a toe-hold in the game.

The Bulls’ win, their first at Eden Park, represented a South African trifecta over New Zealand teams this weekend after the Cheetahs beat the Highlanders and the Stormers beat the Chiefs.

All victories were based on forward power – set piece dominance – and taking charge of the collisions.

For the Blues, loosehead prop Tim Perry, of Tasman, was making his debut. Baden Kerr, in only his second Super Rugby match, took over from the in-form Noakes. Waisake Naholo, on the left wing, was also making his debut. Taranaki flanker Kane Barrett got the nod for his first Super Rugby match, Steven Luatua moving to No8.

It was a tough day for all, although they didn’t disgrace themselves.

The Bulls took a 15-6 halftime lead through tries to their wings Lionel Mapoe and Akona Ndungane. No8 Pierre Spies went close for a third as the half counted down.

Mistakes were common among the Blues as they tried to make something happen. Charles Piutau was dangerous from the back. Centre Rene Ranger injured a shoulder in the first half but bounced back superbly.

The sight of Liaki Moli climbing over a maul was entertaining, but a symptom of his team’s ill discipline.

He later dropped the ball when his team launched an attack, and was then penalised for a high tackle.

In the second half, all change. Frank Halai’s leg drive put the Blues close and Piutau finished on the left, converted by Kerr. The Blues were back in the lead but straight away the Bulls responded through flanker Arno Botha, who scored after extraordinarily good handling skills from reserve prop Werner Kruger, who juggled the ball by his laces.

Halfback Jano Vermaak went agonisingly close for the Bulls in the right corner, only to drop the ball, before Ranger’s long-range stunner.

A Steyne penalty on fulltime sealed it for his team.

Blues (Charles Piutau, Rene Ranger tries; Baden Kerr con, 3 pens)
Bulls (Lionel Mapoe, Akona Ndungane, Arno Botha tries; Morne Steyn 2 cons, 3 pens)
HT: 15-6.

Top gear for controversial TV star

art-353-719098189-300x0

Forget planes, trains and automobiles. It’s private choppers, water taxis and luxury yachts for British television star Jeremy Clarkson.

The scandal-prone Top Gear host’s trip to Sydney has been controversial since claims he called Australians ”convicts” and said he never wanted to return here. But he has still been given the red-carpet treatment.

The obnoxious host, who is here for the Top Gear Festival Sydney – an outdoor motoring event at Sydney Motorsport Park, Eastern Creek, this weekend – has had a no-expenses spared run since arriving last Tuesday.

Clarkson is staying in a multimillion-dollar harbourside mansion in Mosman, during his week-long sojourn with his ”travelling companion” and former mistress, beautician-turned-Top Gear live show employee Phillipa Sage.

After arriving in Sydney, Clarkson was whisked into a helicopter to avoid peak-hour traffic and straight to his holiday rental, landing in a zoned area at Middle Head after he was granted special permission by the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service to land there.

On Thursday, he enjoyed a trip on the harbour in a 21-metre yacht with Top Gear co-host James May and Top Gear Australia host Shane Jacobsen.

Kelly Osbourne ‘fine’ after suffering seizure

Image

Kelly Osbourne is reportedly ‘fine’ after suffering a seizure while filming an episode of Fashion Police in Los Angeles.

It is believed that the star was sitting in a chair, in front of a full studio audience, when she told her co-star, Melissa Rivers: “I don’t feel good.”

She then fell from her chair and began shaking on the floor. Rivers and an audience member rushed to Osbourne’s aid before she came to.

As a precautionary measure an ambulance was called and Osbourne was taken to hospital for observation.

It is not known what triggered the seizure, but Joan Rivers, Melissa’s mother, who was also on set, told TMZ, “She is fine. We just saw her.”

Woman shot outside Auburn home in Sydney, Australia.

ImageA woman is in stable condition after being shot in the legs outside an Auburn home yesterday, seven months after a teenage boy was shot on the same street.

Police said the woman and the 16-year-old boy were not related.

Police said the woman, 43, was shot in the legs four times on Auburn Road about 2.40pm.

Twenty minutes later police raced to Provincial Street in Auburn after reports of a second drive-by shooting at 3pm.

No one was injured.

Police could not confirm if the incidents were linked.

Last August a teenage boy, 16, underwent emergency surgery after he was gunned down in the driveway of an apartment block on Auburn Road.

At the time police said they were looking at whether the teenage boy was shot as part of an ongoing dispute involving his father.

Chalk graffiti on the walls of the apartment block said Brothers 4 Life — a gang founded by Bassam Hamzy.

Police established crime scenes at both of yesterday’s shooting locations.

Idiot thief steals a womans iPhone then accidentally uploads a picture of himself smoking marijuana on her account page.

Image

Cops are hot on the heels of a smoky-eyed Bronx thief whose dumb plan to steal a woman’s smart phone went up in flames when he apparently posted pictures of himself smoking marijuana on his victim’s Facebook page.

Police say the thief jumped the woman on East Tremont Ave. near the Grand Concourse at 3 a.m. on March 2 and ran off with her cell phone. The woman was not injured, cops said.

Investigators were trying to track the thief down when he literally sent them a big clue: The suspect took a picture of himself huffing a thick cloud of smoke that went directly to his victim’s Facebook page, police sources said.

The woman gave the picture to authorities as soon as she saw it.

Cops say it’s only a matter of time before the thief joins a growing list of not-so-smart smart phone thieves who swipe high-end electronics and then use the items to incriminate themselves.

John Legend’s fiancee shows EVERYTHING on instagram and then apologizes; blames the wine.

Image

John Legend’s beautiful model girlfriend, Chrissy Teigen, made a big no-no on instagram. The model was drunk off wine and decided to pose nude (trying to hide her nipples and crotch) as a Twitter milestone ‘present’ to her 200,000 followers. Now granted the beauty is a Sports Illustrated and has been close to nude before, this picture might have taken it too far. When she sobered up and saw the shocked reactions on her feed, she realized she might have taken it too far and put herself on ‘timeout’. Page Six Reports:

“If this doesn’t get me suspended I dunno what will #happy2000000,” she tweeted (later she realized she typed 2 million instead of 200,000.)

“S–t,” she tweeted soon after to downplay the pic. “I didn’t think it was that bad but I’m on the wine.”

“It’s not a nipple it’s a shadow it’s not a bush it’s a shadow,” she continued. ”Oh god I just blew it up on my computer I get what you’re saying oh no.”

Still, it seems we won’t be seeing many more of Teigen’s Instagram pics in the near future. She tweeted: “:( now I is gonna be suspended times”

PSY to unveil ‘Gangnam Style’ follow-up next month.

PSY made the announcement Friday on YouTube, where his “Gangnam Style” video has a record 1.39 billion views.

PSY said he’ll release the new single on April 13 and hold a concert at a soccer stadium that evening. He’s dubbed the concert “Happening” and says it will be broadcast live on YouTube.

The rapper, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, has been on a worldwide tour since his viral video made a global splash in July, with its catchy tune and much-imitated horse-riding dance.

He recently released a Gangnam Style remix and performed at the inauguration ceremony for South Korea’s new president.

Police seize $4m worth of cannabis in NSW, Australia.

imagesPOLICE have seized more than $4 million worth of cannabis in northern NSW this week.

The seizure was during the fifth round of the NSW Police Force’s 2012-2013 Cannabis Eradication Program, which started on Sunday and ended yesterday.

The finds saw 2099 plants seized from several locations including Boorabee, Gradys Creek, Nimbin, Rapville and Tabulam.

“In total, 2099 plants with an estimated street value of $4.2 million were seized and destroyed by police,” NSW police said.

Two people have been charged with drug-related offences and issued with court attendance notices.

More people are expected to be charged in the coming weeks.

This week’s raids follow recent operations in the Coffs/Clarence, New England, mid north coast and Tweed/Byron areas of NSW.

Commander of the State Crime Command’s Drug Squad, Detective Superintendent Nick Bingham, said the program, which has been running since the mid 1980s, had prevented more than $240 million worth of cannabis reaching streets.

“The ultimate goal of the Cannabis Eradication Program is to reduce the drug’s availability on our streets,” Detective Superintendent Bingham said.

“For more than two decades, the program has proven to be extremely successful and we will continue to raid, seize and destroy cannabis crops in the months ahead.”

He added that if it weren’t for the assistance police received from the community, the program would not have achieved the results it has to date.

Anyone with information on illicit drug supply should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

World’s best restaurant Noma poisons diners.

Image

Denmark’s two-Michelin-star Noma restaurant said on Saturday that tests had shown the poisoning was caused by the stomach bug norovirus, which was brought in by a staff member.

Sixty-three customers fell ill over five days, health officials said on Friday.

Noma said customers could choose between a refund or a free meal, if they dared to return.

A meal at Noma costs 1,500 kroner ($A250). Drinks are extra.

The restaurant has been ranked No. 1 in the world by Restaurant magazine for the past three years.

Inspectors from the Danish food ministry criticised the restaurant for not alerting authorities quickly enough and for failing to take adequate action after the worker fell ill.

Noma blamed a delay in disinfecting the restaurant’s kitchen on internal communication problems.

Even when members of two separate dining parties complained by email, and one employee reported being ill after handling food, no measures were taken the next day.

Mexico vs Canada brawl breaks out at World Baseball Classic 2013.

A nasty brawl broke out in the ninth inning of the World Baseball Classic game between Mexico and Canada on Saturday, with Boston reliever Alfredo Aceves among the several players throwing punches. The fights erupted after Canada’s Rene Tosoni was hit by a pitch from Arnold Leon with Canada leading 9-3 at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was a wild scene, as chaotic as any on a major league field in recent years. After the sides were finally separated, a Canadian coach was hit in the face with a water bottle thrown from the stands. Canadian player Cale Iorg threw it angrily back into the crowd. Several police officers came onto the field, and there were skirmishes in the seats. The game included several intense plays as Canada built a big lead in front of decidedly pro-Mexican crowd of 19,581. Canada won 10-3.

Matthew Ridge kicked out of Swanky party.

Matthew Ridge’s run-in with bouncers at a Viaduct bar in central Auckland started over a cigarette, a witness has said.

As reported in the Herald on Sunday last week, the former All Black and league international was thrown out of Mantells on the Water 10 days ago and physically restrained by bouncers outside, as this photo, taken by a witness, shows.

Ridge claimed in the NZ Herald this week that he sustained nerve damage after having his arm held up his back.

A witness to the incident, but not the person who took the photo, said Matthew appeared to be having a normal conversation with estranged daughter Jaime at the APN Outdoor party before things got out of hand.

The eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said she saw Matthew approach Jaime inside the venue.

“They looked like they were having a pretty normal conversation. Matthew and Jaime were both with friends but their friends had given them space to talk.”

Venue security approached Ridge and asked him to put out a cigarette. Ridge complied but was said to be argumentative. “Matthew looked drunk. He was being friendly to Jaime but rude to everyone else.”

Security then asked him to leave and the two Ridges went outside. The witness said something upset Matthew and he became agitated. Venue security intervened and physically restrained Ridge on a car bonnet.

An upset Jaime attempted to calm the situation but was unsuccessful and left with friends.

In a tweet in the days following, Jaime said: “There is nothing worse than a drama queen trouble maker.” It’s unclear whether Jaime was referring to her father.

New Zealands Black Sox win sixth title.

New Zealand 4
Venezuela 1

New Zealand have won a record sixth world softball championship after another masterful pitching performance from Jeremy Manley shut down Venezuela in today’s final.

The Black Sox claimed their first title since 2004 by beating the South Americans 4-1 at Rosedale Park in Albany, with Manley tossing his second straight complete game.

Captain Rhys Casely came up with the big hit, a three-run home run in the third, while catcher Patrick Shannon also homered.

“It’s pretty surreal at the moment,” Casely said. “It hasn’t really sunk in – I think it will take a couple of weeks – but I’m just really proud of the guys, the way they hung in there all week.”

For New Zealand, their fourth championship in the last five events made up for the disappointment of losing to Australia in the final of the previous edition, while Venezuela can console themselves with their country’s first medal at a world championship.

Pitching was a question mark for coach Eddie Kohlhase’s team heading into the tournament, exemplified by Manley’s struggles with a knee recovering from surgery.

Snow at his Illinois base prevented the pitcher from working outside until he got to New Zealand, but his form this week has been vintage.

After impressing in relief against Australia in Friday’s first playoff game, Manley battled a severe bout of food poisoning to toss seven innings without allowing a run yesterday against Venezuela as his side advanced to the tournament showpiece.

The South Americans – playing in the memory of late president Hugo Chavez – set up the rematch by upsetting Australia in this morning’s bronze medal match, before Manley ensured history repeated with another commanding performance.

After allowing a run in the first, Manley settled down and struck out six Venezuelan batters while allowing just four hits.

“Jeremy pitched a hell of a game for us and kept us in it,” Casely said. “And we had 17 other guys in there as well that kept pushing us through.”

The Black Sox bats went to work on overhauling the early deficit in the bottom half of the first, with singles from Tyson Byrne and Brad Rona putting two men on with one out. But Donny Hale grounded out and, after a pitching change, Rhys Casely struck out to end the inning.

Manley looked to have worked into a groove in the second and retired the side in order, before the Black Sox levelled the game. Ben Enoka’s single was erased when Thomas Makea grounded into a double play, but Shannon then hit a two-out shot over the right field fence to make it 1-1.

Venezuela made another pitching change in the third, bringing in yesterday’s starter Ramon Jones who, after much posturing, promptly threw at Rona and appeared unrepentant as the Kiwi made his way down to first fixed with a glare.

The pitcher came to regret his lack of command when, after Daniel Milne worked a walk, Casely made amends for his earlier strikeout by jacking a two-out three-run homer to centre field to make it 4-1.

The captain also drove in a vital second run against Venezeula yesterday, making his mark on a tournament he was in danger of missing. A persistent shoulder injury has seen his play restricted throughout the week, and he has seen very limited time in the field, but he stepped up today to all but clinch the championship.

Casely said the hit made up for all the weeks of rehab, even if he wasn’t looking to make such a defining contribution when at the plate.

“It was certainly nice. I wasn’t looking to hit a home run – I was just looking to make solid contact after I struck out the first time. I was just happy to put good wood on the bat and get one out.”

ImageNathan Nukunuku was inches away from making the result certain the following inning, with his deep fly ball caught at the fence, but Manley was pitching like a three-run lead would be more than enough.

And so it proved, with Manley tossing a perfect seventh to spark wild celebrations on the mound.

Yuri Milner: Google, Facebook & Wikipedia will last 100 years.

cn_image.size.Yuri_Milner

“It’s almost a theorem that can be mathematically proven,” said Russian investor and early Facebook backer Yuri Milner at a Vanity Fair-hosted talk on Saturday morning at South by Southwest in Austin, TX. “If you want to get disproportionate returns you have to go against the flow.”

Milner was interviewed by Vanity Fair contributing editor Bethany McLean during a wide-ranging, big-idea morning session of SXSW Interactive that was attended by hundreds of lanyard-wearing listeners. The two discussed Milner’s high-flying tech investment goals (his Digital Sky Technologies has backed Zynga, Twitter, Spotify and Groupon), and the philosophy behind his creation of the controversial $3 million Fundamental Physics Prize.

Much of the talk centered around Milner’s most famous investment; he told McLean that when he met Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, he knew he’d found someone who was not only a visionary, but someone who would figure out monetization in short order. “I saw somebody who was clearly a genius and who was on a mission,” Milner said. “You don’t really meet those people often, and it’s always a miracle when you actually do meet such a person. It didn’t take me a lot of time to recognize that. That was almost intuitive decision, alongside some mathematical calculations, to back him.”

Truly groundbreaking founders, Milner says, are fiercely competitive and uniquely driven. “Many people underestimate the kind of qualities that you need to have to be a successful founder,” he told McLean. “The level of sacrifice that one needs to take to be able to create something significant is almost universally underestimated.” It is, he said, “slightly inhuman” to be an entrepreneur.

McLean then turned the conversation to the Fundamental Physics Prize, the most financially valuable academics prize in the world, which Milner instituted in 2012 to encourage scientific achievement. “A trader on Wall Street should not necessarily be making ten times more than the best scientist in the world,” he argued. “I wanted to send a message to the people who are deciding what to do, and the smartest of them are not necessarily choosing science any more.”

“This prize is targeted at making a few heroes in our society that would be known to a large number of people, similar to the celebrities in entertainment and sport and business,” Milner added. “I think it’s unfortunate that we don’t have enough heroes that are admired by a large portion of the population because of their scientific achievements.”

Throughout the discussion, attendees had been tweeting questions to the hashtag #askmilner. Midway through the conversation, McLean turned to a screen showing those questions and tossed them Milner’s way. One question regarded IBM’s longterm sustainability—the company has been around for over 100 years. Which tech companies, the Tweeter wondered, did Milner think would have a similar lifespan? “Google will last 100 years,” he declared confidently. “Facebook will, and Wikipedia will.”
